EditWarning: not all units have the same firmware
This page has not been updated for a while now, and probably most units that are being shipped now have menus which may look the same as the YF ones documented in this wiki but have a different bootloader and menu launcher. See
this thread for more info. If your unit does not have the \ResidentFlash2\YFAP30 folder do not attempt to use any of the alternative menus listed here as there is a risk you will "brick" your device and none of the registry fixes listed in this wiki will work. The
registry reset and
firmware linked from this wiki will not work either because the bootloader will not pick them up.
sku.29378 definitely doesn't have the same firmware although it does have a \ResidentFlash2 folder, see
this thread.
sku.30501 has a completely different processor, operating system, and system board so most of this page will not apply to it.
EditThe ResidentFlash2 partition
The files for the main menu and supporting programs are all stored in a hidden partition called \ResidentFlash2. To access this partition:
- Run Windows Explorer on the GPS (see "How to get into Windows CE mode" below)
- Select the \ResidentFlash folder
- Start the onscreen keyboard (bottom right)
- Enter "2" at the end of the \ResidentFlash in the address bar
You can also access it from desktop Windows without going into Windows CE mode on your GPS. You need application called
Total Commander and install a plugin to it called
WinCE FS. When you have both installed:
- Make sure Activesync connection is working
- In Total Commander under drives select Network Neighborhood
- Select "WinCE Device"
- Select the \ResidentFlash folder
- Enter "2" at the end of the "\\WinCE Device\ResidentFlash", either by making a slow double click on the empty space behind it, or with Shift+F6 while the cursor is on [..] directory
The same way you may use
FAR Manager and plugin
WM Explorer vacation packages You will be able to copy, move, delete or edit files just like if you were connected to GPS with FTP connection.
 Manualy changing path |
EditHow to get into Windows CE mode
- Create a text file called YFGo2CE.bld. The file's contents can be anything but must be at least 1 byte. (Alternatively you can download it HERE)
- Copy the YFGo2CE.bld file to the root directory of the SD card
- Power off (not sleep) the GPS, then switch it back on
The GPS will come back up in Windows CE mode. In this mode the Power button only puts the GPS to sleep, it doesn't completely power off.
If this method doesn't work for you and you are not using the original 2GB SD card that came with the GPS, try again using the original SD card. Users have reported that this does not work on some SDHC cards.
While in Windows CE don't set a password using the control panel or you will not be able to get into the device (no keyboard to enter the password). If you have already done this you need to use
this procedure to factory-reset the registry.
There are lots of other things you can do in Windows CE that will probably brick the device too so be careful.
Remove or rename the YFGo2CE.bld file and press the Reset button (the hole above the SD card slot) to get the main menu back.
You can add an item for Windows CE to the tools menu by
editing the menu designer shoes to add an item for \windows\explorer.exe, for example:
<ToolsDlg IMAGE="181" RECT="0,0,480,272">
...
<Explorer
IMAGE="257"
RECT="214,0,98,98"
EXEPATH="\windows\explorer.exe"
Style="ShellBtnText"
TEXT="Explorer"
/>
EditBackups
Before you start modifying anything, make backups:
1. Use
CERegeditor to make a backup of the registry.
2. Use Windows Explorer or Total Commander to make a backup of the \ResidentFlash2 partition.
3. Use Microsoft ActiveSync to make an ActiveSync backup.
4. Make a copy of all the files on the SD card.
EditMenu editing
The main menu that comes up when you start the GPS can be edited to add new items and change the actions of the existing ones.
The menu editing instructions
here are accurate with the following exceptions:
The skin files in this unit are:
- \ResidentFlash2\YFAP30\Skins\COLOR7_NAV_EN\COLOR7_NAV_EN.dat
- \ResidentFlash2\YFAP30\Skins\COLOR7_NAV_EN\Color7MoveShell.xml
- \ResidentFlash2\YFAP30\Language\*.xml
Some of the XML structure has changed since the linked article was written, but the overall concept is the same: the Color7MoveShell.xml file defines the structure of the menu, the language resource file defines the text, and the dat file defines the graphics.
To test your modified menu you need to terminate and restart the shell program which you can do with a task manager (for example itaskmgr). Alternatively there is an entry in the Color7MoveShell.xml file called "DebugCloseBtn". If you rename this to "CloseBtn" you will get a (rather ugly) close button in the top left that terminates the shell. You can then restart it by running \ResidentFlash2\YFAP30\Color7MoveShell.exe from Windows Explorer or another launcher.
EditA new alternative menu
Please read the
warning about the different versions of the firmware before trying this.
The main menu system can be changed to a different version that can be found in "Step 3" of
THIS LINK, and also on its new homepage
WWW.GPSUNLOCK.NET. This menu is for Bluetooth enabled units only, but the Bluetooth option can be edited out of the menu (or simply ignored) if required.
Some benefits of this menu include the ability to add and edit GPRS configurations from the menu itself, and a simple 2-page menu scrolling feature.
EditUpdated firmware
Updated firmware for these units is downloadable
here. This is the same firmware which was posted by DX staff on
sku.23569, though that link has since been removed from Rapidshare. This firmware will not work on
sku.23568 (version without Bluetooth) it will not boot past the initial image; There is no available firmware for the 23568.
This firmware fixes a problem with the FM transmitter when resuming from sleep mode.
Users have found two issues with this firmware upgrade so far:
- Sometimes it will remove the Bluetooth options from the menu. There is a fix for this in the FAQ.
- It removes the Greek and Russian language options from the menu. You can restore this by extracting the Greek.xml or Russian.xml skin file from this original ResidentFlash2 backup and copying it over another language file in the \ResidentFlash2\YFAP30\Language folder (for example Hungarian.xml).
To use the firmware:
- Make sure your battery is fully charged and the GPS is plugged in to the power supply.
- Take the SD card out of the GPS and copy the firmware to the root directory of the SD card using a card reader.
- Put the SD card back in the GPS and reset the unit.
- You should see several updating prompts.
- Once the firmware has been updated, delete the contents of the archive from the SD root directory or it will update again the next time you reset the unit.
It updates to RomVersion: 7DA82C.YF.F.2.26, which was previously 7DA82C.YF.F.11.3, and Software Version V3.0.12.8, which was previously v3.0.9.26. There are no differences to the main menu and the Windows CE version appears to be the same. There is an extra menu file in the skins folder called Color7MoveShell_NOBT.xml, which the software copies over to Color7MoveShell.xml if it thinks that you don't have Bluetooth (and sometimes, even if you really do!).
EditChanging the boot image
This changes the image that is displayed when the device is first switched on to an image of your choice. I used it to "brand" the device with my cellphone number. I tried this and it worked for me, but if something goes wrong it could brick your device, that is render it completely useless, so try it at your own risk!
As far as I know there is no way to get back the original boot image.
- Make sure your battery is fully charged and the GPS is plugged in to the power supply.
- Make a new image that is exactly 480x272 pixels.
- Save the image file in BMP format (not JPG or GIF) with 24-bit colors. The file name must be "Logo82c.bmp". This may be case-sensitive
- Copy the file to the root directory of your SD card.
- Reboot the device by pressing the reset button (the hole just above the SD card slot).
- You should see a "Found logo file, Updating, Update done" series of messages, then your image will be displayed and the device will boot.
- Remove the Logo82c.bmp file from the SD card, otherwise it will update every time you reset.
If this doesn't work for you for some reason, compare your image file to
this sample file.
This MAY work for any GPS that has been shipped with a different bootloader (82A, 84A, 82AV4 & 82AV6 and possibly have WinCE 6).
- The file name must be "Logo82a4.bmp" if your firmware is 82AV6 (i have tested and it works).
this may also be the case for other firmwares.
EditGPRS
EditAdding GPRS connections
The standard menu system doesn't allow you to create custom GPRS service provider definitions. To add a service provider you need to edit \ResidentFlash2\YFAP30\GPRS.ini.
Another option is to use this alternative menu system
HERE that allows you to add and edit custom GPRS configurations from the menu itself.
EditTo use GPRS to connect to the Internet:
You need to pair your phone with the GPS to use GPRS. Select the "Pair" option from the Bluetooth menu on the GPS, then initiate pairing from your phone. Once you have done this your phone should show up in the list of devices on the GPRS DUN list.
EditTMC (Traffic Message Channel)
If anyone knows about working TMC hardware with this DX GPS then please let us know here.
Further these may work but confirmation and testing is needed. Anyone feel free to do so.

EditLanguage definition for power off
The message that is displayed when you press the power switch is only defined for English, two types of Chinese and Hungarian. If you speak a different language you can add the correct message in your own language by editing \ResidentFlash2\YFAP30\Poweroff.ini.
EditUsing the AV In socket
The AV in socket is a direct input into the video chipset. As soon as you connect a recognized composite video source to this socket the display will switch to displaying the video.
You can connect a composite video source to the AV In socket using these DX products:
- sku.03541 4-Pin 2.5mm to 3.5mm Stereo Audio Jack Convertor
- sku.5143 3.5mm Audio Jack (Male) to RCA Audio Converter (30cm)
and optionally
- sku.02627 Triple Composite AV Cable Coupler Extension Connector
In this configuration the video should be connected to the red RCA connector and audio to the white RCA connector. Thanks to babuOA for this info (
thread).
NOTE:
- sku.10633 4-Pin 3.5mm Minijack to 3 x RCA Composite AV Cable
This cable can be used according to the instructions in this
thread, but will not produce stereo audio output.
When you have everything connected properly and with correct cables, here is a
video showing how it should work.
Update March, 6, 2010
The winning combo seems to be:
- sku.10633 4-Pin 3.5mm Minijack to 3 x RCA Composite AV Cable (1.25-Meter)
- sku.31497 Nokia AD-52 Gold Plated 2.5mm Male to 3.5mm Female Audio Adapter
With optionally but recommended:
- sku.2627 Triple Composite AV Cable Coupler Extension Connector
Full stereo input and all 4 wires are connected correctly.
===> plug layout from back to tip.
1234
1) Ground/Mass
2) Composite Video (Yellow RCA plug)
3) Audio Left (White RCA plug)
4) Audio Right (Red RCA plug)
Works great as I'm playing my PS3 audio/video now on my *
sku.26916 4.8" LCD 372MHz CPU Windows CE .NET 5.0 Core GPS Navigator with Bluetooth + 2GB Maps SD
Image quality after 1.8meter PS3 multicable + 1.25meter sku.10633 is surprisingly good and has a clear picture.
One minor issue is that the adapter is not angled, so you have 2 straight plugs connected to your gps.
Total length is 57mm from unit to where you can bend the cable.
EditMioPocket
Warning: You need to modify the MioPocket installation slightly before running the installation for the first time. Otherwise you will encounter a compatibility problem with this GPS's Bluetooth control program. The handsfree will keep ringing when there is no incoming call. If you have this problem, use a registry editor to set this value to 0:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Player\PLAY\123
MioPocket 3.0 is great package of menus, applications, games and tools intended for the Mio line of GPS devices. It will also install and run on these GPS devices, with a few minor tweaks.
These procedures are based on MioPocket 3.0 build 47. Future builds may require different installation instructions so always check the Readme file that came with the build. These instructions are based on the "SD Card Installation" method in the Readme.
Installing MioPocket
- Backup your registry first. The installation makes a lot of changes to the registry and could conceivably cause problems for the device or your GPS application.
- Unzip the MioPocket distribution to a folder on your PC.
- In the subdirectory MioPocketAutoRun\Registry, edit the file MediaPlayer.reg and find this value:
"123"=dword:00000001
Change it to:
"123"=dword:00000000
- Copy these files and folders from the MioPocket distribution to the root of the SD card:
- MioAutoRun.exe
- MioAutoRun.scr
- MortScript.exe
- MioAutoRun folder
- Media folder
- Execute \SDMMC\MioAutoRun.exe by setting it to the GPS program from the GPS menu (Setting, Nav Path), or from Windows Explorer if you already have access to Windows CE.
The GPS should restart and start up the original menu, then start up the MioPocket menu over the top of that.
To prevent the original menu from starting:
You can save some time and memory by not loading the regular YF shell at startup. The disadvantages are that without the regular shell running the menu button will not work and the power button will now only sleep instead of giving the option to power off. You could edit the MioPocket menus to add an item for \ResidentFlash2\YFAP30\PowerOff.exe to get the original Power Off behaviour. There is a program for hooking the power key supplied with MioPocket but it doesn't seem to work on this device.
Only do this if you already have the MioPocket menu working at startup. If you remove the only working menu program you will lock yourself out of the device. This can only be recovered by restoring the registry to factory settings as described
below.
- Open a registry editor on the device and navigate to HKLM\init
- Make sure there is already a registry entry here Launch9999=\ResidentFlash\MioAutoRun\launch.exe. This should have been added by the MioPocket install.
- Remove HKLM\init\Launch50=YFLoader.exe. Do not remove any of the other "Launch" entries as they are essential Windows components.
- Select the "Device Menu" option in MioPocket and select \Windows\YFLoader.exe as the program to run, so you can still access the original menu when you need it.
To restore the original menu
Put back the registry entry HKLM\init\Launch50=YFLoader.exe and remove HKLM\init\Launch9999=\ResidentFlash\MioAutoRun\launch.exe.
To recover unit when no shells loaded
If you encounter a problem where no shells at all are loaded or you can't start anything with touch screen, there is a way
to run applications via ActiveSync connection. User FAR Manager's plugin WMExplorer, press Ctrl-Alt-S and choose the program you want to run on your unit. This way you may restore misconfigured unit.
GAPI setup for games
- Run GAPI setup from the settings tab of the menu
- Select "Install alternate driver" (this one suppresses the "mismatch" error)
- Now select the only YFGPS driver in the list
- Run the tests to check that it works
Maximizing memory for the GPS application
- Go into MioPocket Settings and enable "Close MioPocket during nav apps."
- Disable "regular registry backup," also in MioPocket Settings.
EditRestoring the registry to factory settings
The registry is stored on a flash disk partition and is persistent across cold resets. If you have a problem caused by registry settings you can get the factory registry back by erasing this partition. This is a risky operation and should only be used as a last resort.
EditTo erase the registry using the Control Panel:
If you still have access to Windows CE, follow the procedure
here.
EditTo erase the registry by formatting:
If you don't have access to Windows CE use this procedure (thanks to morpheus32):
- Make sure your battery is fully charged and the GPS is plugged in to the power supply
- Create an empty file called Yformat.fmt
- Edit this file with a text editor and write the following code inside: 666F726D6174
- Save this file on an empty SD card.
- Put the SD card in the GPS and switch it on or reset it
- A formatting message on the screen should come up. Wait for it to finish formatting.
- When it is done an error message will appear "No OS on SD found" or similar
- Switch your unit off.
- Delete Yformat.fmt from the SD card
- Copy the firmware files (see the "Updated Firmware" section) to your SD card and put it back in
- Switch the GPS on and the firmware should be updated
EditFAQ
My screen went white and it wouldn't start up until I plugged in the power supply
It does this sometimes if the battery runs out, especially if it was plugged into a computer at the time. It should be fine once you charge the battery. You may need to press the reset button (small hole above the SD slot). Although the screen went white, the software may actually run. You may turn it off by pressing the off button and tapping the screen in the same spot you would press when turning it off, at the prompt: "This device will be powered off in N seconds,
power off sleep".
How much memory does it have?
64MB RAM, 128MB flash disk (about 59MB flash disk available for files in \ResidentFlash).
What is the battery life?
It could be half an hour or as long as 1-2 hours depending on the function you are using it for and the backlight level. In sleep mode it lasts for several days. Users seem to get different experiences with battery life so possibly some units have better batteries than others. There is a thread about replacing the internal battery with higher capacity batteries
here.
The time goes to 00:00 when I switch it on
It sets the time when it gets a GPS lock. If your time zone is set in the control panel it will even take daylight saving time into account. Some GPS programs (for example iGo) also set the system time so make sure your time zone is correct in the GPS program settings as well. If you use sleep mode rather than switching it off then the time will remain set and the GPS will lock faster.
Does it support SDHC memory cards?
Yes, users have reported success with SDHC memory cards up to 16GB.
Does it support SD WiFi cards?
Yes, thanks to Vishek there is a complete procedure for using these units with an SD WiFi card
here.
Can I run the MP3 player at the same time as the GPS program?
It is possible but the device only has 64MB of RAM and some of the navigation programs, especially iGo 8 with TTS, need a lot of memory. Also task switching is awkward, because you have to press the menu button on top of the box to bring up the menu, then select whatever you want to switch to from the menu. You can't just flip back and forth (it would be interesting to work out how to hook the menu button to go to a different app). There is some code in the standard menu to prevent you from running some apps (e.g. video and photos) when the GPS program is running, but you can run the MP3 player.
The GPS interferes with distant FM radio stations
Yes, some users have reported a lot of FM interference even when the FM transmitter is not in use. It is much worse when the GPS power cable is plugged in.
The sound is not working
Check that the FM transmitter is switched off in the settings. When the FM transmitter is on, sound from the speaker is disabled.
How to Do Your Own Alterations at Home,
How to Make Costumes at Home,

How to Install Your Own Solar PanelsThe FM transmitter is not working
The USB cable acts as the antenna for the FM transmitter so the GPS must be plugged in to the power supply or another USB cable for the transmitter to work.
What GPS software runs on this unit?
Users have reported success with:
- Route 66 Version 8
- Navigon 2100 (with tts)
- PolNav 2008 R 5.X & R 6.0.X
- Destinator 7/8/9 (with tts)
- Garmin XT v5
- TomTom v.7.910
- Sygic v 7.6.080820
- Igo 8 (with tts)
- Igo 8.3 (with tts)
- AmIgo 8.4
- Smart2Go v4.1.14000
- MioMap 3.3
- OziExplorer 2
- waze 0.14.2 (PPC version works great, detailed instructions in Hebrew - waze's Hebrew Wiki)
- BeeLineGPS (part of MioPocket)
- viaGPS 3.0 Black Edition
- nDrive 9
- Navitel 3.2.6.3594
Note that some of these may be "hacked" versions rather than official releases.
Do Pocket PC and Windows Mobile software packages run on this unit?
The standard versions of most Pocket PC and Windows Mobile software won't run on this unit, for two reasons:
- It is a very cut-down version of Windows CE, not Windows Mobile, so many DLLs that PPC programs expect to be present are missing
- The Windows filesystem is completely replaced after every restart so programs and drivers that need to be installed into the filesystem will not work unmodified.
There are ways around this, and you can often find patches by searching on sites like
www.gpspassion.com and
www.gpsmodding.com. Also the
MioPocket package has a good collection of pre-modded software and many of the DLLs that you will need, but please use the
procedure on this page if you want to install the full MioPocket package on this device.
All the Bluetooth items disappeared from the menu
Download and run
this fix. The instructions are in a README.TXT file in the archive. Note that this will overwrite any changes you have made to the Color7MoveShell.xml menu file.
Is Bluetooth handsfree sound transmitted through the FM transmitter?
Several users report that the handsfree sound (that is, the caller's voice sound) is not transmitted through the FM transmitter (
link to thread). The ringtone for an incoming call is transmitted however. This may be so that your phone call isn“t broadcast over the radio!
Does it have a SiRF III GPS chip?
It has the
Centrality Atlas III. This is a SiRF system-on-a-chip product and has a built-in GPS processor. So it doesn't have the actual
SIRFstar III chip but it does have a SiRF GPS chip. It has 30 parallel channels according to the product insert, which is 10 more than the SIRFstar III, although this probably doesn't make much difference to its performance. There are only 31 satellites covering the whole earth and it only needs to lock on to 6 or so to get a position.
In practice it seems to be easily as good as or better than the last standalone SiRFstar III GPS I had. It's able to get good fast locks even from indoors and I have never seen it lose a lock outdoors. A few buyers have had problems with very weak signals that seem to be caused by faulty units.
Can I connect USB peripherals (external hard disk, WiFi card) to the GPS USB socket?
The USB mini-B socket lets this GPS work as a USB peripheral device. The GPS would need to be a USB host to be able to connect hard disks or other USB peripherals to it. Under the USB standard you can't use a Type B socket as a host socket. It would need a separate USB Type A socket (or a USB on-the-go socket) to be a host.
WikiPedia has more info on USB.
Instead of the main menu the GPS Test program is appearing
The unit displays the GPS Test if the menu program could not load, because its program files are corrupt or missing or a registry change has stopped it loading. Reflash with yfapp.wzp from the
firmware, and if this does not work
erase the registry and reflash all the
firmware.
